Light-sound installation – project in development

Cosmic Rain by Tilen Sepič is a project in development that will premiere in autumn 2020. The light and sound installation consists of a spread net, which connects LED panels and motorised kinetic elements. Light and movement, which produces sound, are the effect of the signals from muon detectors. These were developed from the example of the Cosmic Watch, an open-source technology for detecting muons, developed by the institutes of MIT and WiPAC (USA) and NCBJ (PL) as an upgrade of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory in Antarctica.

Muons are particles invisible to the naked eye, produced when cosmic rays – high-energy particles coming from space, mostly from outside our solar system – hit Earth’s upper atmosphere. The installation Cosmic Rain visualises this natural phenomenon in an abstract and minimalist language of a light and sound installation. The emphasised material representation of cosmic particles in the shape of light and sound impulses will enable the viewer a sensory experience of the physical and cosmic events happening all around us,  yet inaccessible to our senses.
